“This Trauma-Conscious certificate is an extension of my heart to yours. It is part of my own healing journey, my life’s purpose. Through my own lived experience of trauma and transcending trauma, this program was born, called into existence, and it is a gift I humbly share from my whole-being.”
— Kyle Leia
This unique program has been an integral component of the Svälja Yoga dual-certificate 250hr YTT since 2018. In 2022 it began being offered as a stand alone certificate program open to all.
This trauma-conscious yoga certificate is for certified yoga instructors, fitness instructors, people in the helping professions (social work, mental health practitioners, body workers, health care, etc.), and individuals impacted by trauma or secondary trauma. The truth is, most people have experienced some trauma, even if they don’t recognize it as such.
This program is distinctive as we delve into the research, reality, impact, and outcomes of trauma but also widen our lens to reclaiming our wholeness. Through our unique Whole-Being Well-being Yoga Approach we embark on reconnecting to our embodied wholeness. We don’t just stay with the trauma, we hone in on transforming trauma through a healing-centered growth-oriented blueprint. This program is for anyone, even if it is not for the purpose of working with and supporting others, but to enhance your own beautiful healing journey.
Yoga means to unite and is a pathway to well-being and to the realization of our innate wholeness. This program invites us to join a revolutionary movement creating a world where all people can belong and be whole. We are grounded in the truth that we all hold within ourselves incredible ancestral, collective, and personal strength, resilience, and potential for healing, transformation, and growth - for the most revolutionary act we can embark upon is our own healing.
If you are not a yoga instructor but would like to be, you might consider our dual-certificate Yoga Teacher Training program wherein you would receive 200 hour yoga certificate and this trauma-conscious certificate. Feel free to contact us to inquire which option is best for you.

Kyle began teaching yoga in 2002. She has two 200-hour teacher training certifications. The first, from Sun Moon Studios in Mankato, MN, which focused on a variety of traditions, including Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, Kundalini and Hatha, and focused heavily on the asana component of yoga. The second, was at Yoga North in Duluth, which followed the Himalayan Tradition of Hatha Yoga and was rich in yogic philosophy. She obtained her 300-hour teacher training certificate from Yess Yoga in Minneapolis in the spring of 2021 and over 2020-22 underwent over 100 hours of in-depth Yin Yoga training with Bernie Clark, Yess Yoga, and Miriam Hanson’s 30 hour Yin Certificate offered at Svälja. Kyle is a trauma survivor and personally knows the devastating impacts and outcomes of trauma. She is a living testimony to the fact that we can transform trauma and stress in order to rise from the ashes and use our unique experiences and gifts to make a difference in the world. She indicates that yoga saved her life and is a powerful pathway to healing and growth. She she grew up with parents who struggled with Substance Use Disorder (now in long-term recovery) and lost her sister to a drug overdose in 2017. She is passionate about advocating for recovery, knows we can do better to save lives, and as a result is the Board Chair of Recovery Alliance Duluth (RAD).

She is a lover of writing and published poet of the book Grace Intoxicated. She weaves poetry into her yoga classes as a way to open consciousness and connect individuals with something greater than themselves. She knows yoga and poetry can be instrumental in healing and transformation. PREPARE (before & after)
In-depth training weekends are intense. We are together for long days. It’s important to care for yourself before, during and after your intensive weekend training. We recommend getting rest, nourishing yourself, finding some quiet time if possible, and organizing your materials to be prepared.
Additionally, because this is a program that delves into trauma, it can be complex, layered, and require more emotional labor than typical trainings. It’s important to be aware that because this is a trauma focused program, we will be studying some heavy topics that may be triggering.
Please take your own self-assessment (or feel free to talk with us) on where you may be at in your own healing journey and if you might be ready to embark on this work. Further, through our studies you may become surprised about trauma you’ve experienced that you weren’t previously aware of. This can lead to an emotional reaction, or other unexpected somatic body experience. We weave in many opportunities to settle our nervous systems and care for ourselves, but feel a responsibility to provide this trigger warning so you can make an informed decision on taking this training at this juncture in your life.
We also provide immense flexibility and freedom within the training space to take care of yourself as you need, take breaks, and practice being with potential difficult and intense experiences with tools we will teach and provide throughout the weekend. Some things past participants have done to prepare include scheduling days off from work if possible and scheduling therapy or other supportive interventions such as bodywork (massage) before and/or after these long weekends. We go over a lot of material so in whatever way you can, find space to allow for integration.
We embark on deep work in this program. It can be helpful to see a therapist, spiritual director, personal coach, seek sacred counsel, or connect with safe family and friends to support you on your journey and integration. Whatever supportive resources you have available, this is a beautiful time to tap into your team and/or build it further!
If you need referrals to good resources, please let us know and we will be happy to provide you with some ideas of people we recommend.
